The creator's glossary

Creator jargon, translated into plain language. Each term defined in a few lines, no detours.

Hook

The first 1 to 3 seconds of a video, designed to stop the viewer from scrolling. It's the #1 driver of retention — and therefore of algorithmic distribution.

Retention

The percentage of the video actually watched. TikTok, Reels and Shorts algorithms use it as their main signal to decide whether to push a video.

Faceless

Describes a channel whose creator never shows their face: quotes, finance, ambience, stories… A booming model, particularly suited to AI generation.

FYP / For You

TikTok's discovery feed (“For You Page”). Appearing there means reaching people who don't follow you yet — the goal of every short video.

CTA

“Call to action”: the prompt to act at the end of a video — follow, comment, click. A video without a CTA leaves its growth to chance.

Niche

An account's thematic territory (personal finance, beginner fitness…). A clear niche helps the algorithm know who to show your videos to.

Engagement

All interactions on a piece of content: likes, comments, shares, saves. Shares and saves weigh the most.

Reach

The number of unique people who saw a piece of content. Not to be confused with views, which count repeat watches.

CPM / RPM

CPM: what advertisers pay per 1,000 impressions. RPM: what the creator actually earns per 1,000 views, after the platform's cut.

B-roll

Illustrative footage dressing up a narration (landscapes, typing hands, city at night). AI Video generates it automatically.

Voice-over

A video's audio narration. Can be recorded, AI-generated, or produced with your own voice via voice cloning.

Dynamic captions

Captions synced word by word, often styled and animated. Essential: most videos are watched on mute.

Template

A reusable video structure: hook type, sequence, transitions, pacing. See viral templates.

Trend

A format, sound or concept riding a popularity wave. Riding a trend early can make a video explode; too late, it drowns.

UGC

“User generated content”: authentic-looking content, filmed as if by a user. Widely used in advertising for its natural feel.

Repurposing

Recycling content from one format to another: a podcast into clips, an article into a video. Chatedits, conversely, creates the original content directly.

Shadowban

A platform quietly limiting an account's reach, usually after repeated rule violations. Often invoked, rarely proven: check your hooks first.

Watermark

A logo stamped by a tool on exported videos. Platforms penalize videos carrying a competitor app's watermark. Chatedits adds none.

OAuth

The official protocol connecting applications: you identify with the platform, the app receives a revocable token — never your password. That's how Chatedits publishes on your behalf.

Content calendar

Planning your posts over time. See the Chatedits calendar.

Voice clone

A digital replica of a real voice, created from a short sample, then usable to generate unlimited voice-overs.

Autopilot

A mode where AI creates and publishes content without human intervention, following a set direction. At Chatedits: the Auto-channel.
